SEN-18-18 A Bill to Increase Electoral Integrity

BILL#: SEN-18-18

TITLE: A Bill to Increase Electoral Integrity

SPONSOR: Jake Tidwell, Off-Campus Senator (jtidwe14@vols.utk.edu)

DATE: 29 October 2018

Whereas, the Constitution of the Student Government Association does not stipulate the duration of application for the Election Packet,

Whereas, the Election Packet is the document governing all of the rules, regulations, and procedures surrounding the elections for the Student Government Association,

Whereas, during the Spring 2018 semester there was considerable confusion on the duration of application of the 2017 Election Packet,

Whereas, this creates a potential loophole where electoral integrity may be violated up until the new Election Packet is passed,

Whereas, this loophole was previously upheld by the Judicial branch of the Student Government Association in a Spring 2018 decision, wherein a student was informed that they could not submit an electoral integrity violation until after the new Election Packet had been passed,

Whereas, this runs counter to the Student Government Association’s idea of fair elections,

Be it hereby resolved that the Constitution of the Student Government Association be amended in the following ways:

Add: “b. The Election Rules and Procedures packet, once adopted and approved by the Student Senate, shall stay in effect until the passage of the next year’s Election Rules and Procedures Packet.”

Be it further resolved that this amendment take place in Article IX, Section 3 of the Constitution of the Student Government Association.
